Movin’ Shoes Running Club

MSRC Response to COVID-19

We want everyone to be able to join this community no matter their financial situation. While these membership fees support the club and our mission, we acknowledge the impact of COVID on personal finances. If you are able to pay the full amount, we encourage you to do so in order to support the club and our mission. If you are unable to contribute the $25 membership fee for 2020-2021 due to COVID, you do not need to submit payment. If this is the case, please still submit your completed membership form so we know you are interested in joining the community.

“The mission of the Movin’ Shoes Running Club is to foster an inclusive running group that supports the local running community through volunteerism, team race participation, training, and social events. We welcome runners of all abilities and styles to be part of the team.”

Club Goals

  • To represent Movin’ Shoes in a positive manner through volunteerism, sportsmanship, friendliness, encouragement, and teamwork.

  • To wear a Movin’ Shoes t-shirt/singlet during races and volunteering events!
  • To assist the local running community in their personal fitness goals
  • To have fun!

Club Etiquette

  • Golden rule – always treat others how you would want to be treated
  • Be safe – be alert when crossing streets, wear the appropriate gear, run on the left, remain visible
  • Proudly wear your Movin’ Shoes tshirt or race singlet!
  • Have fun!

Statement of Inclusion

We strive to connect runners across race, pace, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, sex, gender identity, ability, age, religion, non-religion, and sexual orientation. We are on this journey together, and recognize that there is work to be done regarding racism, social justice, and equality. We are dedicated to fostering a running community that is diverse, equitable, and inclusive. Anyone committed to treating others with dignity, respect, and fairness is welcome here; we encourage runners to bring their whole selves, knowing that they will be respected – because running is for all of us.

A taste of what’s to come this April. A taste of what’s to come this April.
These throwback photos keep getting better. Introd These throwback photos keep getting better. Introducing our social coordinator, Tim!

• Name: Tim Willcox

• Hometown: Green Bay, WI

• Years Running: 28

• Favorite route: Trails in the Arb

• Why do you run? Lots of reasons! I like setting a race goal and doing the work to achieve that goal (there's meaning in the process!) I like eeking the very last drop of ability out of myself during races and workouts. I like being outside and experiencing all the different weather and the seasons. I like the social time when running with friends. I like clearing my head and daydreaming during solo runs. I like seeing the sun rise and the sun set. I like the lifestyle. I like being fit!

• Why did you join the club? There's just something about being around a bunch of like minded individuals that feels "right". It's nice to be part of a spinning wheel!

• Favorite/weirdest running memory? My entire senior year of cross country eligibility at UW-Platteville. Our varsity team was made up of a lot of upperclassmen and we set the goal to qualify as a team for the NCAA championships...we'd be the first team in school history to do so. Everyone on the team, varsity and JV went all in on the goal...logged tons of miles...took care of the small things...and wouldn't you know...we did it! It was just a good feeling to know everyone on the team was working just as hard as you to make the goal. It made digging a little deeper in a race that much easier.

• Favorite recovery snack? Fruit smoothie, coffee, and if the day allows...a shower beer.
Hi fives for everyone! Introducing volunteer coord Hi fives for everyone! Introducing volunteer coordinator and Bay Loop extraordinaire, Zachary:

• Name: Zachary Redding

• Hometown: Spooner, WI

• Years Running: Like 23 or so

• Favorite route: Monona Loop plus the bay since I have to get home.

• Why do you run? It clears the mind, but also going up against a stopwatch tests my limits.

• Why did you join the club? It's great having the store as our home base close to where I live, and it's been enjoyable getting to know others across differing age groups and abilities. Plus our color scheme is hot.

• Favorite/weirdest running memory? Holy cow, there are many. But to narrow it down to a common thread, I have several that have come from Ragnar Relays- In one race, alerts came out that a) a bear was spotted on a course segment, as well as b) a drunk driver on a subsequent segment. In another, one of our runners was re-routed two additional miles due to a shooting investigation, and finally a segment in the middle of the last Ragnar I did was delayed for a couple hours as police tracked down a road rage suspect.

• Favorite recovery snack? For a healthy training option, chocolate milk/cocoa. After a big event, pizza or a burger & fries.
Remember Morgan? Hint: she was in a stroller from Remember Morgan? Hint: she was in a stroller from the last post. Our Diversity coordinator and killer route master, introducing Morgan Boss:

• Name: Morgan Boss

• Hometown: Lawrence, KS

• Years Running: 10

• Favorite route: On the Lakefront Trail to Picnic Point. Gotta touch the lucky rock.

• Why do you run? To feel accomplished and to build my confidence. I’ve never been naturally gifted when it comes to athletics (don’t throw a ball at me) but I am proud of the workouts and races I have finished. Also, being able to run with my dad is always a gift!

• Why did you join the club? I’m an introvert and have always run alone, so this was an opportunity to force myself out of my comfort zone. I joined the group a couple weeks after moving to Madison to find a community and to find friends.

• Favorite/weirdest running memory? My favorite memory was finishing a half Ironman. I had never been so exhausted and so elated and so nauseous at the same time. Back then, I even had to walk a big chunk of the half marathon. I hope to complete the Madison Half Ironman this upcoming year and run it all!

• Favorite recovery snack? Eggs. Scramble them. Fry them. Throw them in an omelet.
Hold on to your stroller! Introducing the father t Hold on to your stroller! Introducing the father to the father/daughter MSRC dynamic duo: Paul Miller, MSRC Treasurer.

• Name: Paul David Miller

• Hometown: Grew up in Cherokee, IA. Though, before moving to Madison, my wife, daughter (Morgan Boss) and I lived all over the country. Madison is clearly our Hometown now.

• Years Running: 42 years. Still unhappy that my high school cancelled Cross Country after my sophomore year.

• Favorite route(s): Arb trails or Picnic Point trails

• Why do you run? It has proven effective for clearing the mind (I run without earbuds). It gives me a chance to exercise my demons... in safety...

• Why did you join the club? I had a desire to belong to something that combined a personal passion with my desire to be part of something larger than myself (something that is not tied to a title, advancement, money or other distraction).

• Favorite running memory? Running with my daughter, Morgan, as she completed her first marathon (same daughter, when she was little, that I use to push in the three wheel jogger — aptly named “the dragster”).

• Favorite recovery snack? Smoothie made with soy milk, banana, berries, almond butter, yogurt, protein powder and, of course, BEETS!

A bit about Liz, MSRC Secretary extraordinaire, co A bit about Liz, MSRC Secretary extraordinaire, coming atcha with some wise wisdom when it comes to exploring new trails:

• Name: Elizabeth (Liz) Veler

• Hometown: Boston, NY by way of Ishpeming, MI

• Years Running: 10!

• Favorite route: Shorewood Hills or Capital City Trail

• Why do you run? To stay in shape for my marathon addiction, and for the relationships that I've gained through running with others

• Why did you join the club? I started running with the track group off & on shortly after I moved to Madison. I was impressed with how welcomed and comfortable I felt even around athletes literally running twice as fast as me. When MSRC was reimagined a few years ago I was eager to help establish the group.

• Favorite/weirdest running memory? I've had numerous "adventure runs" on trails that have ended up 2 or 3 times as long as they were supposed to be. After all, why not take the fork in the path that you don't know where it'll lead you! (I've always made it home eventually)

• Favorite recovery snack? Lay's Classic potato chips, Pizza.
Get to know your favorite egg-eating-running-banan Get to know your favorite egg-eating-running-banana from Subzero!

• Name: Liz Mehls

• Hometown: Tomah, WI

• Years Running: 16

• Favorite route: There are so many! I like the Lower Yahara Trail with the bridge into McDaniel Park in McFarland; the Glacial Drumlin trail in Cottage Grove; and anything around campus for the nostalgia factor.

• Why do you run?: The #1 reason is that I am a better person, partner, and teacher when I run. My #2 reason is the friendships. It’s amazing how well you can get to know someone on a long run! I met one of my best friends in a speedwork group, and we’ve run many races together since (usually in banana suits!).

• Why did you join the club?: I am obsessed with the Subzero Race Series, and the club was promoted at the races. I signed up to keep the good vibes going! Plus, pancake runs and the great routes that Morgan creates.

• Favorite/weirdest running memory?: Honestly, I’ve been streaking through this pandemic, and the neighborhood kids have become my cheering section. They are elementary aged, and one kid runs out the door (mid-breakfast) to yell, “Go, Liz!” and the others will stop their outdoor play to clap for me when I run by. It’s the freaking best.

• Favorite recovery snack?: Eggs.

• Name: Tom Kaufman (TK)

• Hometown: Madison, WI

• Years Running: 53

• Favorite route: Arb, Lake Monona

• Why do you run? Something I’ve done for a long time. I like the feeling of getting outside, getting my heart rate up, clearing my head of unimportant matters, and the lovely feeling at the end of a run.

• Why did you join the club? I actually started the first version of the Movin’ Shoes Running Club with Movin’ Shoes founding owner Roger Eischens in 1984 as a way to help connect the runners in the Madison area.

• Favorite/weirdest running memory? There have been a few over the years. In no particular order - running a relay leg of the 200 mile Nappa to Santa Cruz Relay over the Golden Gate Bridge at 2:30am under a full moon, running a 13 mile route with my oldest son Noah that went up Cadillac Mountain in Acadia National Park (Maine), running with my youngest son Zachary through a National Park in South Africa alongside a group of Ostriches, and coming face to face with a wolf on a solo run in the Boundary Waters (Minnesota).

• Favorite recovery snack? Endurox orange flavor, although anyone who knows me knows that I love chocolate chip cookies.

We are so pleased to introduce Emily Ford. Emily was recently the second person and first woman to through hike the 1,200 mile Ice Age Trail during the winter. “Impressed” does not adequately cover the way we feel about her accomplishment. Emily hiked more than the distance of 45 consecutive marathons carrying a pack, in the winter.

Check out Emily’s Instagram page to see her journey and the details from what she ate, the gear she used and how she cared for her Black hair on trail.

“I want people to know that literally ANYONE can play outdoors. No matter which boxes you do or do not check. Through my time backpacking, I've never really met another brown person backpacking, skiing or mountain biking. I know that brown people are outdoors (I see it on instagram now!) But I want to add to the story.”
