Movin’ Shoes opened their first store on State Street back in the fall of 1973. Before this time, the only way to purchase running shoes was by mail order. The owners Roger and Herb each pitched in $500 to start the store and were only open 4 hours a week. Each customer was a friend to these men and they knew just about all of them by name.

In 1976 Movin’ Shoes moved to South Park Street and has remained there ever since. Karl Harter was hired and later became the store owner, which he prided in staying a small independent business.  He felt, just like Roger and Herb did, that each person who walks in the door is a friend.  Never has Movin’ Shoes sold a shoe for suggested retail and shoes are always slightly below this price.

Movin’ Shoes moved to a new location at 528 South Park Street in July 2006, now in a bigger and better store that Karl once called “The Movin’ Shoes World Headquarters.”  In 2016, the store came under new ownership by Jim Van Boxtel, a local Madisonian whose entire career has been in shoes.  His experience has spanned from Store Manager and Buyer to Sales Rep and finally to Owner of Movin’ Shoes.  Movin’ Shoes continues to be “Madison and Wisconsin’s foremost running specialty store, providing shoes, support, and service for all kinds of runners!”

As more people joined Madison’s running community, the desire for organized events grew.  Not every employee was an elite runner. However, several employees were trained exercise scientists with a sharp eye for running biomechanics.  This not only helped Movin’ Shoes aid customers with proper shoe selection, but also helped the store maintain a selection of running shoes that were geared first toward runners and not towards advertising hype.

South Park Street was not a destination shopping area for many people in Madison. While not far from UW, many of the old storefronts have closed over the years.  Karl had opportunities to move to what some felt might be more desirable locations, but was committed to keeping Movin’ Shoes a viable business in that neighborhood.

INTRODUCTIONS: a new type of post, where we featur INTRODUCTIONS: a new type of post, where we feature a variety of perspectives in the running (in this case, the hiking) space.

We are so pleased to introduce Emily Ford. Emily was recently the second person and first woman to through hike the 1,200 mile Ice Age Trail during the winter. “Impressed” does not adequately cover the way we feel about her accomplishment. Emily hiked more than the distance of 45 consecutive marathons carrying a pack, in the winter.

Check out Emily’s Instagram page to see her journey and the details from what she ate, the gear she used and how she cared for her Black hair on trail.

“I want people to know that literally ANYONE can play outdoors. No matter which boxes you do or do not check. Through my time backpacking, I've never really met another brown person backpacking, skiing or mountain biking. I know that brown people are outdoors (I see it on instagram now!) But I want to add to the story.”

These throwback photos keep getting better. Introd These throwback photos keep getting better. Introducing our social coordinator, Tim!

• Name: Tim Willcox

• Hometown: Green Bay, WI

• Years Running: 28

• Favorite route: Trails in the Arb

• Why do you run? Lots of reasons! I like setting a race goal and doing the work to achieve that goal (there's meaning in the process!) I like eeking the very last drop of ability out of myself during races and workouts. I like being outside and experiencing all the different weather and the seasons. I like the social time when running with friends. I like clearing my head and daydreaming during solo runs. I like seeing the sun rise and the sun set. I like the lifestyle. I like being fit!

• Why did you join the club? There's just something about being around a bunch of like minded individuals that feels "right". It's nice to be part of a spinning wheel!

• Favorite/weirdest running memory? My entire senior year of cross country eligibility at UW-Platteville. Our varsity team was made up of a lot of upperclassmen and we set the goal to qualify as a team for the NCAA championships...we'd be the first team in school history to do so. Everyone on the team, varsity and JV went all in on the goal...logged tons of miles...took care of the small things...and wouldn't you know...we did it! It was just a good feeling to know everyone on the team was working just as hard as you to make the goal. It made digging a little deeper in a race that much easier.

• Favorite recovery snack? Fruit smoothie, coffee, and if the day allows...a shower beer.

Hi fives for everyone! Introducing volunteer coord Hi fives for everyone! Introducing volunteer coordinator and Bay Loop extraordinaire, Zachary:

• Name: Zachary Redding

• Hometown: Spooner, WI

• Years Running: Like 23 or so

• Favorite route: Monona Loop plus the bay since I have to get home.

• Why do you run? It clears the mind, but also going up against a stopwatch tests my limits.

• Why did you join the club? It's great having the store as our home base close to where I live, and it's been enjoyable getting to know others across differing age groups and abilities. Plus our color scheme is hot.

• Favorite/weirdest running memory? Holy cow, there are many. But to narrow it down to a common thread, I have several that have come from Ragnar Relays- In one race, alerts came out that a) a bear was spotted on a course segment, as well as b) a drunk driver on a subsequent segment. In another, one of our runners was re-routed two additional miles due to a shooting investigation, and finally a segment in the middle of the last Ragnar I did was delayed for a couple hours as police tracked down a road rage suspect.

• Favorite recovery snack? For a healthy training option, chocolate milk/cocoa. After a big event, pizza or a burger & fries.
