Movin’ Shoes opened their first store on State Street back in the fall of 1973. Before this time, the only way to purchase running shoes was by mail order. The owners Roger and Herb each pitched in $500 to start the store and were only open 4 hours a week. Each customer was a friend to these men and they knew just about all of them by name.

In 1976 Movin’ Shoes moved to South Park Street and has remained there ever since. Karl Harter was hired and later became the store owner, which he prided in staying a small independent business.  He felt, just like Roger and Herb did, that each person who walks in the door is a friend.  Never has Movin’ Shoes sold a shoe for suggested retail and shoes are always slightly below this price.

Movin’ Shoes moved to a new location at 528 South Park Street in July 2006, now in a bigger and better store that Karl once called “The Movin’ Shoes World Headquarters.”  In 2016, the store came under new ownership by Jim Van Boxtel, a local Madisonian whose entire career has been in shoes.  His experience has spanned from Store Manager and Buyer to Sales Rep and finally to Owner of Movin’ Shoes.  Movin’ Shoes continues to be “Madison and Wisconsin’s foremost running specialty store, providing shoes, support, and service for all kinds of runners!”

As more people joined Madison’s running community, the desire for organized events grew.  Not every employee was an elite runner. However, several employees were trained exercise scientists with a sharp eye for running biomechanics.  This not only helped Movin’ Shoes aid customers with proper shoe selection, but also helped the store maintain a selection of running shoes that were geared first toward runners and not towards advertising hype.

South Park Street was not a destination shopping area for many people in Madison. While not far from UW, many of the old storefronts have closed over the years.  Karl had opportunities to move to what some felt might be more desirable locations, but was committed to keeping Movin’ Shoes a viable business in that neighborhood.

A bit about Liz, MSRC Secretary extraordinaire, co A bit about Liz, MSRC Secretary extraordinaire, coming atcha with some wise wisdom when it comes to exploring new trails:

• Name: Elizabeth (Liz) Veler

• Hometown: Boston, NY by way of Ishpeming, MI

• Years Running: 10!

• Favorite route: Shorewood Hills or Capital City Trail

• Why do you run? To stay in shape for my marathon addiction, and for the relationships that I've gained through running with others

• Why did you join the club? I started running with the track group off & on shortly after I moved to Madison. I was impressed with how welcomed and comfortable I felt even around athletes literally running twice as fast as me. When MSRC was reimagined a few years ago I was eager to help establish the group.

• Favorite/weirdest running memory? I've had numerous "adventure runs" on trails that have ended up 2 or 3 times as long as they were supposed to be. After all, why not take the fork in the path that you don't know where it'll lead you! (I've always made it home eventually)

• Favorite recovery snack? Lay's Classic potato chips, Pizza.

Get to know your favorite egg-eating-running-banan Get to know your favorite egg-eating-running-banana from Subzero!

• Name: Liz Mehls

• Hometown: Tomah, WI

• Years Running: 16

• Favorite route: There are so many! I like the Lower Yahara Trail with the bridge into McDaniel Park in McFarland; the Glacial Drumlin trail in Cottage Grove; and anything around campus for the nostalgia factor.

• Why do you run?: The #1 reason is that I am a better person, partner, and teacher when I run. My #2 reason is the friendships. It’s amazing how well you can get to know someone on a long run! I met one of my best friends in a speedwork group, and we’ve run many races together since (usually in banana suits!).

• Why did you join the club?: I am obsessed with the Subzero Race Series, and the club was promoted at the races. I signed up to keep the good vibes going! Plus, pancake runs and the great routes that Morgan creates.

• Favorite/weirdest running memory?: Honestly, I’ve been streaking through this pandemic, and the neighborhood kids have become my cheering section. They are elementary aged, and one kid runs out the door (mid-breakfast) to yell, “Go, Liz!” and the others will stop their outdoor play to clap for me when I run by. It’s the freaking best.

• Favorite recovery snack?: Eggs.
